PERU AT A GLANCE

THE COAST
The coast, 1,500 miles along the Pacific coast, is an area of complete contrast from the cold sea, where we can find sea lions and exotic fauna in their natural habitats and fertile oasis irrigated by rivers, to sandy, rocky deserts so barren that forms of life are almost absent. The Mochica, Chimu, Nazca and Paracas Cultures were developed along this coastal stretch. Currently, in the same area, we find the most important cities of modern Perú. The coast, which is only 8% of the Peruvian territory, shelters 45% of the population.

THE ANDES or SIERRA
The Peruvian Andes rise up to 21,700 feet above sea level, they are crowned with permanents now and there you may find impressive hollows such as the “Majes Canyon” in Arequipa, one of the deepest in América. Its three mountain chains join at various points forming what wecall the knots of Vilcanota and Pasco in Perú, and Loja in Ecuador. The Western Branch goes abruptly into the ocean, giving origin to falls, precipices, peaks, etc. On the other hand, the Eastern Branch forms the Collao Plateau with an inner ocean. Lake Titicaca, located at 1,200 feet above sea level. The sierra represents 27% of the Peruvian territory, and is home to 40% of the total population

THE JUNGLE

The Jungle is the largest region in the country, as it covers 65% of its total surface, but in houses only 6& of its population. It is in Perú where the American Jungle – green frame work of the Amazon River – begins. There are still some aborigines tribes where time stopped along time ago: their customs and cosmology have been the same for ages. The most important cities in the Jungle are Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado, points of departure for excursions to the tribes and where safaris are organised.
